For many years LaCie marketed a line of external hard drives under the names LaCie Big Disk & LaCie Big Disk Extreme. The goal of this product was to provide consumers and prosumers a large-capacity drive with high-throughput. The product accomplished these goals quite well through the use of a RAID 0 Striped RAID controller and two or four hard drives in a Striped RAID Array, inside a sealed enclosure. The problem with the LaCie Big Disk & LaCie Big Disk Extreme is most purchasers did not realize they were purchasing a RAID device at all, let alone a RAID 0 Striped Array. Many purchasers of these drives were film and music production professionals needing larger volumes or faster throughput. If one or more drives fail in a LaCie Big Disk & LaCie Big Disk Extreme, a RAID recovery must be performed, since the failure of any RAID member in a RAID 0 Striped Array causes failure of the complete RAID set.
